Menopause is more often than not the reason for hot flashes and night sweats for women, hot flashes are experienced during the daytime and essentially night sweats are same, the difference only being that the hot flashes happen while you sleep and are sometimes triggered for different reasons.
Though many differ on the subject night sweats can be controlled relatively easily. Some simple changes in your lifestyle can prevent night sweats before they actually happen. One good advice is to avoid any foods, caffeine drinks and alcohol for 2-3 hours before you go to sleep. Other things to avoid are; smoking, taking hot showers, hot liquids and exercising, again for about 2-3 hours before going to bed. This can help avoid triggers that could be associated with night sweats and will at the least give you a better sleep.
Of course lowering the heat in your house and especially the bedroom will help, just make sure that though dropping the temperature by 3 to 4 degrees that you should not add blankets or covers as those defeats the purpose. Though it might be somewhat chilly when you go to bed you’ll soon warm up under the covers and you’ll fall asleep with ease. Cotton sheets are better than most and wearing light clothing will aid in controlling the hot flashes and night sweats. Another idea might be to place a fan close to your bed for immediate relief.
If you have experienced a stressful day or afternoon either at work or with the family try to wind off and relax before going to sleep. One of the most common reasons for night sweats and anxiety related and you want to particularly avoid any stress before going to sleep.
Meditation and breathing techniques have been especially helpful for many people, twenty minutes if deep breathing and exhaling can really relax you and some people practice yoga for the same purpose. In any case try to relax and you’ll find you sleep much better and spend little time wondering and worrying about your night sweats.
